A researcher who lost her arm in a laboratory explosion at the University of Hawaii at Manoa is suing the school.

Thea Ekins-Coward filed the civil complaint last week. 

The explosion occurred March 16, 2016, in the school’s Pacific Ocean Sciences and Technology (POST) building.

In the lawsuit, she says she was invited to the university to receive training at the lab and “had no previous experience in the preparation of gas mixtures with gases which may be combustible in certain circumstances…”

The HSE has warned that all schools need to have clear health and safety arrangements in place for their staff and students, following an incident in which a chemistry laboratory technician lost parts of three fingers and sustained a serious internal injury while preparing a highly sensitive explosive for use in a ‘fireworks’ demonstration to a class of children.

Bristol Magistrates’ Court heard the now retired staff member lost the top joints of his left hand index, middle and ring fingers and ruptured his bowel while preparing the explosive at Bristol Cathedral Choir School.

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) is a national organisation responsible for the collection, processing, testing and distribution of blood and blood products in Ireland with employees across its eight regional centres.

This role is based in National Blood Centre and is an excellent opportunity for a qualified Environmental, Health and Safety Officer to broaden their knowledge in a regulated environment.

The salary scale attached to the post is the Grade VI Scale €44,849 to €55,032 (incl. LSI) per annum. Entry point onto the salary scale is dependent upon relevant public sector experience.
