Course Objectives

After completion of this course personnel should be able to:

• Understand the context and importance of lab safety management principals
• Understand key components for managing lab safety
• Be able to recognise hazardous areas and substances
• Know how to avoid and minimise exposure
• Select and wear the appropriate PPE
• Identify safe behaviour and safety practices
• Understand housekeeping and storage principles
• Recognise the importance of following organisational policies, SOPs and plans
• Know when to obtain training and receive approval for specific tasks
• Understand their role in lab safety
• Identify potential emergencies and know how to react
• Understand the basic principles of assessing their work and reviewing a risk assessment

• Why manage safety in the lab - lab accident case studies and occupational health data
• Lab safety management system
• Fundamentals of lab safety:
• Understanding the hazards (Chemical, Biological and Physical as relevant to the participants lab)
• Hygiene
• PPE and safety equipment
• Safe work practices
• Storage and housekeeping
• Policies and procedures
• Training and authorisation
• Roles and responsibilities
• Emergencies
• Hazard identification and risk assessment

Applicability

This course is aimed at all personnel working in laboratories.  Up to 20 delegates can attend.

Documentation

Full course handouts will be provided to participants. A course evaluation report will be provided after the course with copies of evaluation forms and signed attendance sheets. Participants will receive course certificates on completion.

Duration

Full day for more in-depth course content (6.5 hours) or half day (3.5 hours).
